Interpersonal relationship is a social and emotional interaction between two or more people in a physical setting such as workplace, home etc or in a virtual setting such as social media.
Interpersonal relationship has been core aspect of society since the advent of civilization. It is among one of the most important aspects of Islam. It can be characterized as sum of positive and beneficial qualities such as honesty, respect, well-wishing, forgiveness, integrity, sincerity and Loyalty etc.
Interpersonal relationship can be expressed by interpersonal behavior. This is behavior between two or more people that depend upon their context of relationship which can be of a colleague, friends, business partner etc.
This behavior is further classified into three types:
• Aggressive behavior
• Assertive behavior
• Non assertive behavior
Aggressive Behavior:
A type of behavior in which a person violates other person’s rights while defending his own rights is an aggressive behavior.
Assertive Behavior:
A behavior in which a person does not violate others rights while defending his own is an assertive behavior.
Non Assertive Behavior:
A behavior in which a person does not defend his own rights and allows others to violate his rights is a non-assertive behavior.
In order to have a strong interpersonal relationship a person should not violate the rights of others and don’t let other violate the rights.
Communication and Language:
In order to have a strong interpersonal relationship a person must have good communication skills i.e. he or she must be able to express himself and makes sure that his message has been conveyed successfully. Language and Communication has a major role in interpersonal relationships because the strength of interpersonal relationship is depending on the communication. Communicating in local language allows a person to develop an effective and unique mode of communication.
Professional Interpersonal relationships:
Professional interpersonal relationship at workplace refers to a strong association between employees.
• Interpersonal relationship has a direct effect on the organization culture.
• An individual needs help of his fellow workers to complete assignments on time and for better results.
• Misunderstandings and misperceptions lead to negativity at the workplace and spoil the work environment.
• It is essential for individuals to be honest with each other for a healthy interpersonal relationship and eventually positive ambience at the workplace.
Interpersonal relationship barriers:
Interpersonal relationships are affected by number of different behaviors and such types of behaviors are:
• Bad character and Behavior
• Fear
• Greediness
• Culture Diversity
• Ineffective Communication.
Ways to improve Interpersonal relationships:
Interpersonal relationships can be improved by following ways:
• Teaching of Islam such as honesty, forgiveness, Patience, Respect, Appreciation.
• Effective Communication.
Islamic perspective:
Islam has following perspective with regard to interpersonal relationship:

"Let them (believers) forgive and pardon. Do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.“
(Al-Nur 24:22)

Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) said:
"By Him in whose hand is my life, one does not attain faith until one prefers for others what one chooses for oneself.“
(Bukhari, Muslim)


Prophet(PBUH) said:
"Allah says: My love is obligatory for those who love one another for My sake. The same holds true for those who join company, maintain social relations and spend money on others for Allah's sake."
(Muwatta of Imam Malik)
"Nor call one another by offensive nicknames. Ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness to be used of one after he has believed."
(Al-Hujurat 49:11)


"Do not speak ill of others behind their backs. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Nay you would detest it.“
(Al-Hujurat 49:12)
